Ann Kullberg In-Depth Tutorial (by me!)

Having the attention span of an easily distracted flea, I am not often one for doing a drawing a second time. It can be a bit Groundhog Day and I find myself yearning for Spring. Having said that, some cars are just so classy, some scenes just so cool, that they warrant a second spin. That was the thinking behind this one, as I have done this before, but this time I wanted to change it up just a little.

Now I am trying to think how to put this delicately and coming up short, so let me just say plainly that sometimes size matters. With paper and scale of course. Increasing the size on this one by about 15% from the original tutorial let me squeeze in a bit more detail, having a heap of fun in the process and it does alter subtly the textures created.

Those Caran d’Ache Neo Color II water soluble wax pastels are just delicious. Not in the edible sense of course as that would be like chewing on a candle, but in terms of their sheer stickabilityness. There are times when even a stickier pencil such as Luminance or Prismacolor will not adhere that a wax pastel can save the day. For that, and their sheer blendable beauty and flexibility, I salute them!

They have been used on the sky on this, working seamlessly together with the Luminance like a championship winning wresting tag team. Unlike a WWF tag team, these are available in small, relatively affordable sets and are blissfully quiet. They blend so well that a huge colour selection isn’t essential. Very much recommended to combine with colour pencil for those that have not tried, whether used wet or dry.

I really like the ability of the Luminance to give a smooth blend… I know they are not unique in this, but isn’t it just magical how we can apply our pencils to create such varying textures. Colour pencils are just like the Snap On tools of the art world it seems to me. So all in all, I had a blast second time round with this classic car from a bygone era. The extra paper real estate helped me squeeze just that bit more gleam in, so here you have it… a ‘58 Corvette with pleasingly low running costs and no chrome polish needed, just a suitable space on the wall to be enjoyed! 😊
